Mini Minor 2 Asia Minor

There is nothing mini or minor about the incredible journey a couple of car enthusiasts have undertaken.

There is nothing mini or minor about the incredible journey a couple of car enthusiasts have undertaken.

Nicky West and Robert Stacey, of Welwyn Garden City, completed an epic motoring trip through 10 countries covering 11,063 kilometres in just 35 days. And if that doesn’t sound incredible enough they did the whole thing in a 50-year-old Morris Mini Minor Deluxe!

The couple’s 'Mini Minor 2 Asia Minor' expedition is raising funds for the Willow Foundation and the intrepid duo have set themselves a target of £11,063 – a pound for every kilometre covered.

Nicky, who is an engineer and works in St Albans, explained: “I turned 40 at the end of last year and rather than have a party we decided to do something different. Rob and I have always supported the Willow Foundation which provides special days out for critically ill young adults up to the age of 40. We feel we’ve been so lucky and done so many things many people don’t get a chance to do that we wanted to give something back and my 40th seemed a natural tie-in with the charity.”

The husband and wife team have already travelled far and wide in a variety of different minis but this was this the first time they have drove 'Morris' – an eBay bargain - which has been off the road since 1967.

DSCO Chartered Accountants of Ware were Nicky’s first Hertfordshire business sponsors for the expedition and provided advice and guidance from the beginning. David Suckling, Principal said, “We are incredibly proud of Nicky and Rob. From the start of their planning we admired their spirit and DSCO have decided to make The Willow Foundation our charity of the Year in their honour.”

Nicky and Robert’s epic round journey took them through Europe, Asia Minor and North Africa to the last remaining Wonder of the World – the Great Pyramid of Giza - and back again. “It was a real hard slog,” admitted Nicky. “We spent 10 hours in the car every day and had only two days off. Temperatures got as high as 40 degrees and we didn’t have any air-conditioning. It was however great fun though and of course it was all for a great cause.”

The couple will be publishing a book about their exploits (all royalties to the Willow Foundation) and toy manufacturer Corgi is producing a model of 'Morris'!

Nicky and Robert completed their expedition on June 26th, 2011.
